Bachelor of Architectural Studies at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University

The Department of Architecture’s professional architecture programme is a two-degree programme: a three-year Bachelor’s degree in Architectural Studies (BAS), and a two-year Master’s degree in Architecture (MArch).

Once you have the BAS degree, should you decide not to proceed further, and once you have complied with the South African Council for the Architectural Profession’s (SACAP) practical training requirements, you can register as a senior architectural technologist.

Once you have the MArch (Professional) degree and have complied with SACAP’s practical training requirements, you can register as a full professional architect.

BAS graduates may also register for MTech: Architectural Technology after completing one year of work in an architectural practice.

MA in landscape archaeology at National University of Ireland Galway

The history of landscape archaeology is explored, as are contemporary philosophical treatments of the concept of landscape. Various issues surrounding the protection, management, and presentation of archaeological landscapes are considered and case-studies are used to examine the wide range of such landscapes and their components. There is emphasis on fieldwork train-ing and a critical understanding of the range of sources used. Students are provided with a basic foundation in GIS and its applications in archaeology and are introduced to electronic survey and digital mapping, geophysical prospection, and data processing. Practical demonstrations and field exercises are an important element of the programme.

The aim of this programme is to introduce graduates to the theory and methodologies of landscape archaeology and to provide them with a good introduction to the wide range of
survey techniques used in archaeology today.

Master of Architecture at National University of Ireland Dublin

The degree of Master of Architecture was established to reward outstanding professional achievement in architecture. The purpose of the degree is to attract young graduates to pursue the attainement of high standards of scholarship and intellectual rigour in design activity. Candidates for the degree are nominated as for research degrees, and work under the supervision of academic/professional staff.

A candidate who is the holder of the Bachelor of Architecture Degree or of an equivalent qualification in Architecture, shall be eligible to obtain the Degree of Master of Architecture by Mode I or by Mode II.

Mode I
A candidate must have obtained an honours standard in the Bachelor of Architecture Degree or equivalent qualification in Architecture. The candidate:
(a) shall have attended a prescribed course of study for one year before presenting for examination
(b) shall have submitted a project in architectural design which, in the judgement of the examiners, makes a contribution to the field; and
(c) must have written and presented a dissertation which, in the judgement of the examiners, is of sufficient merit.

The Regulations on entry to the Mode I degree programme are as follows:
1. Candidates for the Degree of Master of Architecture (Mode I) who are holders of the Bachelor of Architecture Degree or of an equivalent qualification in Architecture, must have obtained Honours (minimum level 2.1) in their final examination.
2. Candidates must have the permision of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture to register for the Degree.

Mode II
A candidate may enter for the examination after the expiration of nine terms from the time at which the candidate obtained the Bachelor of Architecture Degree or equivalent qualification. The candidate
(a) shall have designed and executed an architectural work which, in the judgement of the examiners, is of a distinguished character; and
(b) must have written and presented a dissertation which, in the judgement of the examiners, is of sufficient merit.

The Regulations on entry to the Mode II degree programme are as follows:

1. Candidates for the Degree of Master of Architecture (Mode II) must be accepted by the Faculty of the College as prospective candidates at least six months before entering for the examination.
2. Candidates are required to give notice to the Dean of the Faculty before 15 January of the year in which they intend to present themselves for examination, with particulars of the building selected for examination under (a) above, the title of the proposed dissertation and details of their professional experience.

Master of Architectural Science at National University of Ireland Dublin

Candidates for the Degree of Master of Architectural Science must obtain the permission of the Faculty before entering on the course.

A candidate who is a holder of the Degree of Bachelor of Architecture or an equivalent qualification in Architecture, or a degree in a related discipline shall be eligible to obtain the Degree of Master of Architectural Science by Mode I or Mode II on the following conditions:

Mode I
must attend a full-time postgraduate course in the University for at least three terms after obtaining the primary degree;
must present a dissertation prepared during such course; and
must pass an examination on the subject matter of the dissertation if the examiners so decide.

Mode II
must attend a full-time postgraduate course for at least three terms after obtaining the primary degree;
must pass an examination on the course; and
may be required to submit an essay or dissertation as part of the qualifications for the Master’s Degree.
University Regulations
Candidates for the Degree of MArchSc must have obtained Honours in the BArch Degree Examination. Graduates in Architecture who are not graduates of this University may be accepted subject to such examinations or tests as the Faculty may decide.
Candidates must have the permission of the Faculty to enter a course for the MArchSc Degree.
Candidates will not be permitted to attend courses for any University degree or diploma whilst in attendance for the MArchSc Degree.
A Pass graduate who desires to take a course for the Degree of Master of Architectural Science should in the first instance apply to the Head of the School of Architecture who may recommend that the graduate be permitted to take as a test, a subject, to be decided by the Faculty, in which he/she must attain Honours marks; this examination to be taken not less than one year after the degree examination. The application of such a candidate may be submitted then to the Faculty.

AAS in Architectural & Construction Technology at Montgomery College

Architectural and Construction Technology A.A.S.

This A.A.S. track is designed to prepare graduates to organize, operate, manage, and control the unique and demanding systems, procedures, and services in the construction industry, both on the job site and in the contractor’s office. Areas of study include cost control, planning, scheduling, controlling and expediting construction, contract bidding and estimating, personnel management, and the overall management of construction operations. This curriculum prepares students for construction management careers in any type or size of construction firm.

The curriculum is not designed as a transfer program except to institutions having a construction curriculum. A student seeking a four-year bachelor’s degree must meet with the program coordinator in the management of construction program or the Applied Technologies Department chair to work out a suitable program of study.

AAS in Architectural Technology at Montgomery College

Graduates of this A.A.S. track continue their education toward professional degrees or seek employment immediately as paraprofessionals. Technicians specializing in architecture and construction are prepared to assist and work with architects, contractors, and related professionals.

Successful graduates involve themselves in many specialized aspects of the construction industry, including preparation of contract drawings, supervision and/or inspection of construction work, and contract administration. Computer drafting skills provide extensive opportunities for graduates.

Students planning to transfer to four-year schools of architecture should be aware that not all courses in the curriculum may transfer.

AAS in Architectural Engineering Technology at Midlands Technical College

Architectural engineering technicians assist architects, engineers and contractors. A wide variety of jobs are available for graduates, including architectural technicians, estimators and surveyors.
