Master in Interior Architecture at Chalmers University of Technology

Chalmers University of Technology launches a new Master’s programme in Interior Architecture that will provide advanced knowledge in the design of architectural space. Focus is set on enriched spatial experience and the human interaction with space as well as health and environmental issues and knowledge in physical and technical conditions – acoustics, light, colour, materials, indoor climate and construction.

The programme will start in the autumn semester 2009. The aim is to develop abilities to form high quality spaces in an interior art that can organize functions, acoustic atmospheres, lighting and colour, indoor climate and supporting structures to an artistic entirety.

With the course Research by Design as a starting point, the programme uses a creative, investigative approach where design projects are the main educational form. Projects will focus on themes like Space and sound, Space and climate, Lighting and colour, Space, material and construction, and Extreme environments. Public and collective spaces stand at the centre of the studies. The second year course on Design for Sustainable Development will develop deeper knowledge on energy efficiency, materials and emissions, work climate, ergonomics and ‘design for all’.

The programme is hosted by the Department of Architecture, in collaboration with Civil and Environmental Engineering, the IT University and the Lighting Design Center in Alingsås. Through this co-operation, the education generates a diversity that responds to current and future labour market demands: the need for a professional competence that can move between architectural and interior design; deal with the shaping of spatial sequences, indoor and outdoor spaces, general spaces and spaces for specific use, and take part in teams of advanced, integrated design tasks.

Thirty students will be admitted each year. Prerequisites are a Bachelor degree in Architecture, Interior Architecture or Interior Design. Admission will be made by ranking portofolios. Depending on Bachelor profile, the education will give the degree Master of Architecture (in Swedish, ‘Arkitektexamen’), authorised by the Swedish Association of Architects, or Master of Science (in Swedish, ‘Teknologie masterexamen’), with the specification ‘Interior Architecture’.

UG in Architecture and Urban Design at Universidade Federal De Vicosa

Architecture and Urban Design

Architects and urban designers deal with the man-society-environment relationship, exploring a wide range of technological, artistic and human issues. The Architecture and Urbanism Program from the Universidade Federal de Viçosa, started in 1992 and recognized by Decree nº 1.043/97, prepares architects and urban designers, so that they can work either in architectural and urban planning projects or in management, supervision and civil construction. Achitects and urban designers have the competence to work on interior design projects and construction, historic sites and urban design.

The Architecture and Urban Design Program offers courses in graphical illustration, architecture and urban design theory and history; structures and technology; urban and regional planning and architectural projects. This array of courses aims to prepare professionals committed to the social reality in Brazil, who are able to work not only in great urban centers, but also in smaller towns and cities.

The Program has been evaluated twice by the Exame Nacional do Curso (National Undergraduate Course Examination) and was awarded grade “A”. In 2005, the program achieved the highest grade in the ENADE – Exame Nacional de Desempenho (National Performance Examination).

The Department of Architecture and Urban Design (DAU), responsible for the program, has its own building on the campus. There are ateliers with architect drawing desks and laboratories (computer, environmental welfare, plastic, scale modeling and retrospective techniques). The DAU also offers a Latu sensu graduate program (specialization) in City Planning. Several agreements with city halls in the region and other institutions have made it possible for undergraduates to be in contact with the reality of the cities, offering them opportunities of direct involvement with the professional routine, during training periods. In this way, many consultancies have been developed in order to elaborate architectural and urban projects; and even Management Plans for some cities in Minas Gerais State.

The DAU has a highly qualified faculty, come from the best National and International universities, which contributes to the consolidation of the program and leads it to excellence levels equivalent to those of other famous institutions. Nowadays, 70% of our faculty hold Doctorate Ph.D. degrees or are on PhD. programs and 25% hold Master’s degree. Many graduates from the UFV Architecture and Urban Design Program have been selected for graduate programs at the best universities in Brazil, or for positions in public institution recruitment examinations for city halls, state secretaries, IBAMA and the Ministry of Cities.

Department of Architecture at National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli

The Department of Architecture in National Institute Of Technology Trichy had a humble origin 21years back. The department was started with just three faculty members and hardly any infrastructure. But the growth of the department in these twenty one years has been phenomenal. Today we have faculty members who have specialised in all important branches of architecture and a group of able students drawn from all over the country. Together we evolved a work culture that has brought us success in academics, professional practice and extra-curricular activities.

The architectural wing of the main library houses more than three thousand books on architecture and related fields. There is also a fairly large collection in the department library. The department library also includes information on modern building materials. A building science laboratory has been developed in the department. It is an archive of catalogues, samples of various building materials and is constantly upgraded. It enables the faculty members to keep abreast with the latest trends in the building industry and incorporate a more practical approach in their teaching methodology.

Audio-visual teaching aid is being utilized by our department to give a modern fillip to the teaching – learning process.

Our curriculum was devised taking into the changes that are taking place in the construction industry in India, in general and architecture, specific. Equipping the students, the ability to start private practice immediately on completing the course is the main objective of our curriculum, thus encouraging the spirit of the true entrepreneur.

The students and staff are quite proficient in architecture – related computer-software like breeze, daylight, 3D Studio, AutoCAD (2002), Photoshop, GDS, Maya, Micro Station, Micro GDS, etc..

Our department is a participant of the institutes’s interdisciplinary project on the “energy-theme”; a collaborative venture with Government of United Kingdom. Some faculty members were sent to UK in relation to this project.

Today the abilities of our students are so well known that various institutions seek our help for their projects. Cambridge University expert’s study on Kumbakonam city and French Institute’s studies on Far East, Pondicherry and on Gingee Fort are two recent projects in which our students contributed their mite and won appreciation.
