The Architecture Department offers a Bachelor of Architecture degree. This degree program, accredited by the National Architecture Accrediting Board (NAAB), is a five year “first professional degree” program, a pre-requisite for licensing as a registered architect in most states. Architecture epitomizes the “learn-by-doing” pedagogy that is fundamental to Cal Poly. The program is rigorous, lab oriented, and sequential in nature and reflects a balance and integration of design and technology – the theoretical and the pragmatic. The fourth year offers qualified students the opportunity to study off-campus. The fifth year is a selected year long project and final exhibit that salutes the architectural creativity of each individual’s extended research and design.
The administration, faculty and staff are committed to the program and its primary emphasis on teaching excellence at the undergraduate level. The unusual size of the program and the diversity of faculty interests and accomplishments offer a vast palette of directions, concerns and issues as backgrounds for studio work.
The location of the program within the College provides cross-disciplinary opportunities in the areas of Landscape Architecture, Construction Management, City & Regional Planning and Architectural Engineering.

In 2009, most of Northumbria’s full-time undergraduate courses will cost £3,225 per year. However, if you unable to pay the full fee upfront, you can take out a non-means tested student loan for fees and defer the loan re-payment until you graduate, which means you don’t have to commence loan re-payment instalments until you’re earning an annual salary of over £15,000.
You don’t have to worry if you have to stop working, or your salary drops below £15,000. A student loan is different to a bank loan, although it attracts interest, the interest rate is based on inflation, so the amount you repay will be broadly the same in real terms as the amount you borrowed.
Repayments are made at 9% of any amount that is earned above the threshold of £15,000. For example, on an annual salary of £17,000 the repayments would be £15.00 per month and those on a salary of £20,000 would repay £37.50. This is taken from your salary like tax and National Insurance.
There is also graduate choice over loan repayments. Students will have the option once they complete their degree to take a repayment break of 1-5 years when they face significant outlay, i.e. buying a house, etc.
Loans are cancelled after 25 years.
Loans are different to Northumbria Scholarships as the scholarship award is a fixed amount depending on the course you study which does not have to be repaid and can be used for any purpose.

NYIT’s School of Architecture and Design offers a graduate Master of Architecture in Urban and Regional Design. It is a three-semester, 36-credit, post-professional degree for those holding a Bachelor in Architecture degree. The program’s three advanced design studios address urban and suburban design and architecture in the context of their region. These studios explore the relationship of design at many scales from personal to global dimensions.
Cities, towns, suburbs and neighborhoods are interdependent, and to understand the viability of each requires the investigation of their interdependence. It is important to study urban, suburban, and rural neighborhoods as part of a unified region of human settlement. The design studios investigate individual buildings, whole neighborhoods, civic centers, and metropolitan infrastructure together in ways that consider the impact of such intervention on the whole region’s environment. There is an emphasis on the consideration and critique of the historical, physical, social, political, and philosophical context.
The program provides a theoretical and historical understanding of the origin and the socio-political function of cities. It also makes use of a range of design tools, including computer mapping of physical density, demographics, land-use, transportation and ecological information as well as dynamic, interactive, multi-dimensional modeling. Designs investigate the relationship between creating a plan of space as well as the operational issues that must also be designed or organized to implement that plan.

All students admitted to the undergraduate architecture program enter the Bachelor of Science in Architecture Technology (B.S.A.T.) program, and undertake a two-year common core curriculum. This curriculum includes design studios and architectural history courses, as well as liberal arts courses such as English composition, math, physics, behavioral science, economics, fine arts, and social science.
After successful completion of the two-year common core curriculum, students may continue in the four-year B.S.A.T. program, which is accredited by New York State and may lead to New York State licensure, or apply for admission into the five-year B.Arch. program, which provides the successful candidate with a first professional degree accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board. The N.A.A.B.-certified B.Arch. degree may lead to New York State licensure plus reciprocal licensure in all states except California.
Admission to the B.Arch. program requires the submission of a representative portfolio of individual student design work, called the Foundation Portfolio, which is reviewed by a committee of faculty members. Following the acceptance of the Foundation Portfolio by the review committee, the student candidate may apply for admission to the Bachelor of Architecture program. At the time of application, the student must demonstrate a cumulative grade average of 2.75 for all courses undertaken at NYIT or 3.0 for courses in architecture exclusively. Candidates for admission into the B.Arch. program must submit their Foundation Portfolios for review prior to enrollment in Design V or Architecture 401. Candidates must complete the application process and gain admission into the B.Arch. program prior to enrolling in Design VI or Architecture 402.
With the Bachelor of Architecture degree, the successful student may proceed with the sequence of internship and the professional steps that lead to licensure as well as eligibility for certification from the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB). The Bachelor of Science in Architectural Technology is a non-professional degree that permits the successful student to gain a license to practice architecture in the State of New York but does not make the degree holder eligible for NCARB certification. Should the successful Bachelor of Science in Architecture Technology graduate later seek to gain a first professional degree in architecture, he or she could pursue a first professional degree Bachelor of Architecture or a first professional degree Master of Architecture.

Bachelor of Science in Architecture Degree Requirements
The BS degree does not lead to licensure as an architect; instead it presents students with a wide array of other options leading to career opportunities within the building industry. Students can be admitted to the BS in Architecture or transfer from the B. Arch program after two years. The BS in Architecture program requires 135 credits and is structured as follows:
The first two years of the BS in Architecture program are identical to the course of study for the five-year professional program. In the third year, all BS students take Arch 363 followed by a computer elective. Thus every student has at least one full year of computer-based learning.
The BS in Architecture is designed to lead into a series of accelerated graduate degrees such as construction management (BS in Architecture/MS in Civil Engineering), infrastructure planning (BS in Architecture/Master in Infrastructure Planning), management (BS in Architecture/MS in Management; BS in Architecture, MBA), or professional graduate degree in Architecture (BS in Architecture/M.Arch.) leading to licensure.
Course choices will be worked out on an individual basis after consultation with the academic advisor to reflect a student’s individual interests and career objectives. The BS in Architecture provides a wide array of curriculum paths; it is designed to provide a superb general education for all building professionals.

Bachelor of Architecture Degree Requirements
The Bachelor of Architecture at NJIT is a first professional degree program which is fully accredited by the National Architecture Accrediting Board (NAAB). The curriculum fulfills the educational requirements of the Architectural Registration Examination (ARE), which professionals must successfully pass in order to employ the title “architect”. The ARE is a fully computerized examination which is administered on an annual basis by the Architectural Registration Boards in each state. Students who receive their B. Arch. degree are eligible to take the ARE once they have completed an Internship Development Program (IDP). This internship is generally of three years duration, with some credit given for part-time employment.

Students must take one upper level studio designated as comprehensive studio. All 100, 200, 300 level architecture core courses must be completed prior to enrollment in Arch 563, 564, and 565.

The degree of Master of Architecture was established to reward outstanding professional achievement in architecture. The purpose of the degree is to attract young graduates to pursue the attainement of high standards of scholarship and intellectual rigour in design activity. Candidates for the degree are nominated as for research degrees, and work under the supervision of academic/professional staff.
A candidate who is the holder of the Bachelor of Architecture Degree or of an equivalent qualification in Architecture, shall be eligible to obtain the Degree of Master of Architecture by Mode I or by Mode II.
Mode I
A candidate must have obtained an honours standard in the Bachelor of Architecture Degree or equivalent qualification in Architecture. The candidate:
(a) shall have attended a prescribed course of study for one year before presenting for examination
(b) shall have submitted a project in architectural design which, in the judgement of the examiners, makes a contribution to the field; and
(c) must have written and presented a dissertation which, in the judgement of the examiners, is of sufficient merit.
The Regulations on entry to the Mode I degree programme are as follows:
1. Candidates for the Degree of Master of Architecture (Mode I) who are holders of the Bachelor of Architecture Degree or of an equivalent qualification in Architecture, must have obtained Honours (minimum level 2.1) in their final examination.
2. Candidates must have the permision of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture to register for the Degree.
Mode II
A candidate may enter for the examination after the expiration of nine terms from the time at which the candidate obtained the Bachelor of Architecture Degree or equivalent qualification. The candidate
(a) shall have designed and executed an architectural work which, in the judgement of the examiners, is of a distinguished character; and
(b) must have written and presented a dissertation which, in the judgement of the examiners, is of sufficient merit.
The Regulations on entry to the Mode II degree programme are as follows:
1. Candidates for the Degree of Master of Architecture (Mode II) must be accepted by the Faculty of the College as prospective candidates at least six months before entering for the examination.
2. Candidates are required to give notice to the Dean of the Faculty before 15 January of the year in which they intend to present themselves for examination, with particulars of the building selected for examination under (a) above, the title of the proposed dissertation and details of their professional experience.

Career Opportunities
Most BArch graduates go into architectural practice or go on to further academic study in architecture or related subjects. There are numerous options including setting up independently or working as part of a team in a small or large practice.
There are also opportunities within the architectural sections of a government department or semi-state body or commercial organisations. There are different aspects you can specialise in such as design, technology, architectural conservation or project management. Your skills are transferable and portable and many architects also become involved in projects or work abroad.
Some architects also work in other areas such as planning, heritage site management, landscape, art and culture, or academic research and education. After two years of approved graduate practical experience, holders of the Bachelor of Architecture degree may take the examination for the Professional Diploma (Architecture). Graduates who have passed this exam are entitled to exemption from the examinations in Professional Competence of the RIAI and the RIBA Part 3 and qualify for membership of these institutes.
