PG in Archaeology at Newcastle University

We are based in a region with an incredibly rich archaeological landscape, which includes Hadrian’s Wall and associated Roman settlements, rock art, prehistoric monuments and settlements including dense clusters of Iron Age hillforts, and medieval sites such as Yeavering and Jarrow

Part of the School of Historical Studies, we provide innovative teaching and research in the archaeology of the body and identity, landscape archaeology, artefact studies, prehistoric archaeology, Roman and Byzantine archaeology and medieval and post-medieval archaeology.

Facilities include: students benefit from excellent postgraduate accommodation, a dedicated computer suite, a designated bioarchaeology laboratory and a first-rate library which includes the Gertrude Bell and Brian Shefton archaeological book collections.

There are also impressive collections of Greek art and archaeological artefacts (formerly housed in the Shefton Museum) and of prehistoric, Roman and medieval artefacts (formerly housed in the Museum of Antiquities) in the £26 million Great North Museum which is due to open in Spring 2009.

Careers: our graduates have an excellent record of continuing research or finding employment in archaeology

Research Assessment Exercise (RAE): you can find out more about the University’s areas of research excellence that have been submitted for RAE 2008 and also check how well we performed.
