Within the framework of the Master of Architecture degree, the Architecture + Health Concentration includes seminar courses and studio work appropriate for both a general professional degree and a concentration in architecture + health. The intent of the A+H concentration, which is the most structured and established program of its type in the United States, is to develop the generalist-specialist graduate who can creatively work in both modes. The curriculum concentration includes both the study of health facility design and the study of relationships between architectural settings and their impact on human health and well-being. The primary purpose of the concentration is to study how architectural environments impact health and how to create architectural settings that support the health and well-being of individuals and larger populations.

Studio design projects and seminar courses examine architecture-health relationships for settings and conditions ranging from entire communities to specific projects and individual spaces. The emphasis in the studio is on design excellence within the framework of the complex demands found in the practice of health-care architecture. Student work must stand up critically at all levels of architectural consideration.

The architecture + health concentration is demanding in the scope of its professional studies, with most of the course work designated for specific areas of learning. Students may take advantage of off-campus programs during their first semester of study. Given the number of required courses, students may elect to opt for a five-semester plan of study beginning in the spring semester. The thesis, developed during the final year of study, usually deals with particular architectural topics as they relate to health and well-being.

Architecture is a great field of study for those who are artistically talented and interested in creative design and the built environment. Clemson’s program allows students to tap into their creative talents, introduces them to the challenging world of building design and construction, and prepares them to pursue a master’s degree in architecture and other fields. The first two years of the program prepare students for the Fluid Campus by training them in design, drawing and computer applications. Computer integration in the design studios is emphasized in the second year. First- and second-year students are trained in public speaking through a joint program with the Department of Communication Studies.

Students have access to a full range of course offerings in each of the University’s five academic colleges. While developing skills in design, drawing, computer applications and construction, students also study history, theory, social science and humanities.
Career Opportunities

Numerous career options are available to graduates who have a major in architecture. Many work in architecture offices and other design areas. Others pursue careers as graphic designers, product designers or interior designers. To become a licensed architect, a graduate must also complete a master’s program and obtain a professional license. Most states require that an individual who intends to become an architect must hold an accredited degree.

Architecture has been taught at Clemson for the past three-quarters of a century and remains today the only architecture program in South Carolina. From its origins as a branch of engineering, architecture developed the first independent degree program, first accredited in 1953 and continuously thereafter. The School offers a four-year Bachelor of Arts in Architecture degree with an enrollment of 270 students and a Master of Architecture degree with approximately 60 students. The M.S. in Architecture and the Ph.D. in Environmental Design and Planning are also offered as post-professional research degrees. The graduate program has a specialized option in Architecture and Health that is one of only two such programs in the country.

Today the School is part of a College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities along with the departments of Planning and Landscape Architecture, Art, Performing Arts, Construction Science, Philosophy and Religion, Languages, English, Speech and Communications Studies, and History.

The School of Architecture at The City College of New York (CCNY) offers a five-year program leading to the Bachelor of Architecture. Students interested in this degree must first complete the four-year BS in architecture with a satisfactory grade-point average, and then apply for the fifth-year thesis program leading to the BArch degree.

Students who are interested in the study of archaeology are strongly encouraged to continue their studies at graduate school. M.A. and Ph.D. programs are provided in the department. Academic positions are available for qualified students and professionals. Graduate students apply for curator positions at national and public museums and institutions. They may also develop their careers by participating in excavations of archaeological sites in Korea.

Archaeology is the discipline involving the reconstruction, explanation and interpretation of the past through material remains from archaeological sites. The discipline is mainly concerned with artifacts and sites of prehistoric and early historic times, such as the Paleolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Ages. Archaeological artifacts include stone tools, pottery remains, metal artifacts and bones. Archaeology students devote their time and effort to both class work and field studies. They learn how to collect, analyze and interpret archaeological material by studying archaeological methods and theories. Courses regarding prehistoric and early historic cultural events of Korea, China, Japan, and other parts of the world are offered. Field training involves occasional and organized surveys, excavations and other field data processing techniques.

Department of Architectural Engineering at Chungbuk National University was established in 1978 with emphasis on educating and training future architects with both artistic and technical visions and capabilities. The primary objective of the school\\\\\’s curriculum is to provide comprehensive courses of design, history, and theory for students to become practice-oriented and creative professionals. In 2002, the school has taken its vital shift from the 4-year non-professional program to the 5-year professional degree program that leads to the Bachelor of Architecture, in order to meet the reputed global standard of accredited architecture programs.
