Opportunitie of Master in Architecture at Chalmers University of Technology

Career opportunities

A background in architecture leads to a wide range of career opportunities within design, development and research in the architectural and construction sector. It leads to employment at architectural design companies and planning offices, in the construction industry and at real estate companies. Other career opportunities include working as an academic researcher or technical advisor.

Master in Architecture at Chalmers University of Technology

Chalmers leads research in applied architecture and collaborates with a large network of stakeholders in society. The school of Architecture has a tradition of initiatives in pedagogical development in the design education, relying on well-founded experience and integrated research distinguished by:
a humanistic view of architecture
study projects based on real tasks and problems in society
contacts with users in briefing and designing
an open atmosphere between teachers and students characterised by the absence of prestige.

Programme
Through a project formula, real situations and problems are studied. This provides rich opportunities for practice in sketching, where design gradually develops more and more to address the complexity of the whole of an architectural problem. The structure is a series of courses and design projects. After an introduction you can specialise in:

Matter, space, structure
Focus on architecture “from within” as a field of knowledge with relative autonomy. Architecture is matter formed into space, where all three factors – matter, form/structure and space – are indispensable. Materials and constructions and their architectural possibilities, as well as spaces and their relations, are seen as the basic elements of architecture.

Space for Healthcare, Housing and Work
The main focus in this programme will be applied projects for buildings for healthcare, housing and work space in collaboration with real users. The work will range from an analysis of specific sites to projects aimed at architectural solutions, both new design and re-designing within the built environment. It is the only architectural programme in Sweden with a healthcare building profile.
Urban design and development

Consider how spatial organisation and design exert an influence and can be used in the development of quality and function of urban life, especially in public space. The students’ studio work is carried out in close co-operation with players in both urban regeneration and new development projects.

Master in Architecture and Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology

Chalmers is continuously developing crosslinks through collaboration between the different scientific areas and cultures that make up the university. One cross-link that is growing rapidly is between architectural design and engineering. A sustainable society in the future requires solutions and design that can only be created and improved through close co-operation between these two fields. The Master’s programme Architecture and Engineering acts as a central element and a driving force in this interchange
between disciplines and professions.

Programme
The Master’s programme consists of a common base, with architectural design projects where the search for design concepts and solutions takes place using the know-how and expertise of top researchers from different scientific environments at Chalmers. In parallel with this, advanced computational tools for simulation, modelling and visualisation are trained. Through a composition of elective courses either an architectural or engineering specialisation can be created.

Architectural tracks
Matter, space, structure

Here architecture is studied as matter formed into space and where all three factors – matter, form/structure and space – are indispensable. Materials and constructions and their architectural possibilities, as well as spaces and their relationships, are seen as the basic elements of architecture.

Sustainable building
Provide skills and methods for change situations in which design approaches are required. Students will be trained to find solutions that support sustainable development in different contexts and on different scales.

Engineering tracks
Structural design

Focus on the design of structural systems with an application to different materials. Use is made of advanced structural modelling tools based on the finite-element method. This track offers courses directed at both structural engineering and structural mechanics.

Building performance design
Involves the engineering design of indoor climate and the design and analysis of building components and building service systems in terms of performance criteria and wishes regarding architectural design.

Acoustic design
Focuses on the link between theory and practical application. This is achieved through work in small groups guided by experienced teachers and with access to purpose-designed experimental facilities.

Master in Automotive Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology

The ever-increasing requirements of individual high quality mobility and transportation of people and goods make the automotive industry a necessity in our society. Global warming and environmental challenges push for innovations from a holistic view as well as the need for vehicle manufacturers to meet new customer demands, safety legislation and the pressure to produce vehicles at the lowest possible cost.

Therefore, the need of skilled Automotive Engineers is immense.

The aim of the Automotive Engineering programme (AE) is to prepare students for a professional career with a broad knowledge of automotive engineering while offering specialisations central to the industry and research to meet these requirements.

Programme
The AE programme comprises a block of basic automotive courses which are compulsory for all students. The learning objective of these courses is to provide an automotive engineering knowledge platform from which the students can immerse themselves more deeply in a specialisation, be a part of an automotive project or choose to study courses from linked master programmes, all depending on interest.

The AE-programme should provide the students with potential to develop enhanced skills for analysis, synthesis and management of the automotive development process.

Master in Interior Architecture at Chalmers University of Technology

Chalmers University of Technology launches a new Master’s programme in Interior Architecture that will provide advanced knowledge in the design of architectural space. Focus is set on enriched spatial experience and the human interaction with space as well as health and environmental issues and knowledge in physical and technical conditions – acoustics, light, colour, materials, indoor climate and construction.

The programme will start in the autumn semester 2009. The aim is to develop abilities to form high quality spaces in an interior art that can organize functions, acoustic atmospheres, lighting and colour, indoor climate and supporting structures to an artistic entirety.

With the course Research by Design as a starting point, the programme uses a creative, investigative approach where design projects are the main educational form. Projects will focus on themes like Space and sound, Space and climate, Lighting and colour, Space, material and construction, and Extreme environments. Public and collective spaces stand at the centre of the studies. The second year course on Design for Sustainable Development will develop deeper knowledge on energy efficiency, materials and emissions, work climate, ergonomics and ‘design for all’.

The programme is hosted by the Department of Architecture, in collaboration with Civil and Environmental Engineering, the IT University and the Lighting Design Center in Alingsås. Through this co-operation, the education generates a diversity that responds to current and future labour market demands: the need for a professional competence that can move between architectural and interior design; deal with the shaping of spatial sequences, indoor and outdoor spaces, general spaces and spaces for specific use, and take part in teams of advanced, integrated design tasks.

Thirty students will be admitted each year. Prerequisites are a Bachelor degree in Architecture, Interior Architecture or Interior Design. Admission will be made by ranking portofolios. Depending on Bachelor profile, the education will give the degree Master of Architecture (in Swedish, ‘Arkitektexamen’), authorised by the Swedish Association of Architects, or Master of Science (in Swedish, ‘Teknologie masterexamen’), with the specification ‘Interior Architecture’.

Master in Naval Architecture at Chalmers University of Technology

Large quantities of raw material and manufactured products are transported all over the globe by ship. It is a great engineering challenge to develop new ship systems that could turn shipping into the most efficient, safe and environmentally friendly means of transportation in the future. The aim of the Naval Architecture programme is to offer an internationally attractive and competitive education within planning, design and analysis of large structures from a strength, hydrodynamic and systems engineering point of view. The focus during the programme will be on ships, offshore structures and yachts, but the aim is also to make the programme attractive to students with a general interest in strength analysis, hydrodynamic analysis and systems engineering.

There are two directions available within the Master’s programme in Naval Architecture – ship and offshore and yacht design. Ship and offshore is directed at the planning and design of ships and offshore structures. The focus is on strength analysis of the ship’s structure, analysis of the hydrodynamic performance and on systems engineering. Yacht design is directed at the design of small boats and the focus is on the analysis of hydrodynamic performance, materials, and manufacturing of lightweight structures. Both directions share the same core of compulsory courses. A very important part of the Naval Architecture programme is the ship or yacht design project. The purpose is to participate in a problem-oriented ship or yacht design project. Student teams will be assigned real design problems, guided by professional engineers from industry and faculty members from Chalmers. Modern computer software is an integrated part of the education and the students in Naval Architecture have access to a computer lab/office of their own where project work and individual work can be carried out.
